Advocating for Childhood Cancer Isn’t Easy But There Is One Thing Even More Difficult…

Thanks everyone for checking in….

It’s been a busy month supporting the annual United In Grace’s 2017 Wes’ Wish Toy Drive. We are overwhelmed with the community support we continue to receive including from our local business partners who are acting as drop off locations throughout the local area, our donors who are sponsoring Chemo Ducks, and of course our friends and family who are helping to collect toys and spread the word. We could not do this without the support of each and every one of you, Thank You !!

Welcome to September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  A month dedicated to helping to bring awareness to the childhood cancer fight.  This year we were successful in nearly doubling our local businesses participating in our awareness campaign.  It is so critical to have not only individual support but community support as well.  We are so grateful for everyone’s participation and involvement, We couldn’t do this without everyone’s support !!! Thank you !!!

Thanks for Checking in…..

It seems like 2017 is nearly ½ over already and there is so much work still to do…..

I have completed all the LiveStrong events I plan to participate in during 2017.   I am now concentrating my efforts on supporting my local cancer organizations and their efforts to help bring cancer awareness, education and support.  As I have stated before, we as advocates should not only be thinking national level advocacy, if by doing so we risk losing focus of those fighting this disease in our local communities, neighborhoods and backyards.

2017 Mid-Year Update

Thanks for checking in…

It’s been a busy few weeks since my last post. We had a successful LiveStrong Day in the Workplace where employees had the opportunity to use our new fitness center and help raise funds against Cancer. While the final numbers are still being calculated it was a great opportunity for folks to come out and try their hand at either the elliptical, bike or the treadmill. Every mile logged helped raised funds that go directly to helping cancer patients in their battle.

Thanks for Checking in…

It’s been a productive year to date  with regards to the cancer fight BUT there is still is much work still to do.  If fighting cancer was easy we probably wouldn’t have to be fighting in the first place.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the President’s proposed budget and the detrimental impact this will have in the cancer fight and the recent approval of a temporary spending bill that increases the budget for the Nation Institute of Health (NIH) which is critical to the cancer fight.

The Moral Compass of a Cancer Organization

Thanks for Checking in……

It is so important for cancer organizations to always put the cancer patient first and foremost in everything they do. They are the reason we chose to fight this fight. Organizations that put themselves front and center first, do much more damage to the cancer community as a whole.

A Black Eye For The Cancer Community

Thanks for checking in……..

I titled this post as I did in order to emphasize once again that there are people who are doing more harm than good for the cancer community, shocking I know. They don’t think twice about creating false profiles to advance their cause or in attempts to silence any cancer story that doesn’t directly impact or help their financial bottom line.

2017 Cycling Season Underway !!

It’s been awhile since my last update and post.  Truth be told I was afraid I forgot the LOGIN information which goes to show it’s been WAY too long. I will endeavor to do better with updates as the 2017 Cycling season is upon us.

We had a great end to 2016 with the Wes’ Wish Toy Drive.  We were able to help collect and distribute over 2000 Toys to Children and families battling a long list of diseases including cancer and Sickle Cell. Even though it’s been a few months since the events we are forever great full to all our supporters and donors that help each year to make this event possible.  Through this effort we continue to provide United In Grace Care Boxes to some childhood cancer fighters and we hope to continue this effort throughout the year.

I was once again selected to be a LiveSTRONG Volunteer Leader in Virginia where I hope to continue the work n helping to represent ALL Cancer patients in their fight.  Team LiveStrong had a great showing in the recent 2017 Virginia Beach Shamrock Marathon as well as provided some bike support in the local Sentara Don’t Sit On Colon Cancer 5K.  Both events were a huge success and only goes to support my belief that there is way too much Cancer affecting way to many people and the spectrum is so diverse that no cancer patient should be left behind.  I hope to continue my work with LiveStrong in coming months including advocating for a federal budget that helps move cancer research for ALL cancer patients forward and not backward. If you are aren’t aware, we have a lot of work to do at the Federal level to make sure we don’t take a step backwards !! Please get involved by contacting your own Legislators to ensure funding for the National Cancer Institute and National Institute Health both receive the funding they need to continue their work.

In July I will participating in the 24 Foundation’s 24 Hour of Booty – Charlotte Ride. This is a great event that helps support the Levine Cancer Institute and the Levine Children’s Hospital.  Both of the organizations are doing exceptional work providing research and care to those battling cancer and both are honorable and reputable benefactors of the 24 Foundation’s 24 Hour events. Many of my LiveStrong team members will be participating in the Charlotte and Indianapolis events helping to Kick Cancer To the Curb Once again.

As always i hope all my followers will stay tuned in for future and hopefully more timely updates.

Thanks for checking in….

The Every Cancer Story Counts Cycling challenge is well underway , ok only really 4 days in but it has started and I’ve been able to stay ahead of my daily cycling goal.  Let’s just hope that Hurricane Mathew doesn’t impact my ability to ride but the cycling challenge is less about the riding and more about sharing why Every Cancer Story is important by introducing you to some of the toughest cancer fighters I have come to know over the years who battled this horrible disease.

There is No On/Off Cancer Switch

Welcome and Thanks for Checking in…

As the 2016 cycling season winds down I thought it only appropriate to end with a BANG!!

As many of you know I support and fundraise for many organizations throughout the year. My work with the local Childhood Cancer Awareness Group United in Grace as well as a volunteer LiveStrong Foundation Leader. Both of these organizations have only the very best intentions in helping to bring awareness to the cancer fight and both organizations understand that it must always be about the cancer patient and the impact this dreaded disease has not only on the cancer fighter but the entire family.

I also believe by supporting and yes even fundraising for multiple organizations its helps to create what I believe is missing in the cancer community which is the belief that we can all work together and within our own communities in a respectful manner resulting in even a bigger and positive impact locally, nationally and globally.

Trust me when I say there are enough organizations out there that only believe in a “what’s in it for ME” mentality and only wait for the next opportunity or to start beating the cancer drum. Unfortunately, cancer patients and their families don’t have a switch to turn on and off whenever the mood strikes.

As such for the last 90 days of 2016, as I have done the entire 2016 season, I will be cycling in support of the stories that others dismissed or otherwise looked away from because they didn’t feel their story was worth telling. We will continue to tell our story despite attempts to shut us down through false profiles and intimidation because our fight is right and so are the cancer stories I will be sharing with you all.

For my new followers these stories will provide a glimpse into some of the toughest cancer fighters I have had the honor to know and why Every Cancer Story Counts is more than a social media #hashtag.
