The Book Was Calling, a Return to LiveStrong

I am happy to announce that I am returning to LiveStrong as a 2016 LiveStrong Leader. For many of you this may come as a shock and possibly even some gasps of disbelief.  However I believe LiveStrong’s mission best aligns with my own in the fight against cancer for ALL.  Over the years Deb and I have participated in numerous LiveStrong events and supported many of our friends in their own cancer fighting awareness events, including LiveStrong events, and will continue to do so.

Working together with the LiveStrong Staff, Leaders and Team members my return to LiveStrong will provide increased advocacy opportunities directly tied to my unwavering belief and desire to see a national conversation on improved national funding for cancer research, improved patient care, and addressing cancer related issues across the entire spectrum of the cancer community.  The opportunity to advocate for all cancer patients is the foundation behind my return all the while in doing so remaining respectful of every cancer story.

My return to LiveStrong will provide an opportunity to support the many  outstanding programs and services LiveStrong provides to the cancer community.  For those that don’t know the full story, our first use of some of the LiveStrong programs and services was during my father’s battle with Esophageal Cancer in 2001. Years later during Deb’s battle we found the information that the initial LiveStrong Guide book provided invaluable. The Guidebook remains in a prized and honored location on our book shelf to this day.  In some ways, i feel the book has been calling and only recently have we decided to answer that call.

I will continue to support through my energy and passion local organizations making a difference in our own communities in the fight against cancer. I will not turn my back on those trying to make a difference in the cancer fight and above all will respect all cancer stories that this opportunity will present. I will forever remain thankful to those that support the fight against cancer.

In summary I refer you to these 9 powerful words taken from the LiveStrong Manifesto that summarizes why NOW is the right time for me to rejoin LiveStrong in this fight.

Unity is strength. Knowledge is power. Attitude is everything.

Care Packages for Children Battling Cancer

Greetings everyone and as always thanks for checking in….

The 2016 cycling season has been somewhat hampered by the string of cold weather but I remain hopeful that we will be out hitting the streets soon enough all in an effort to help raise awareness for many of the causes we will be riding for.  We will have our first official event in the 2016 Kick Cancer to the Kurb Tour in April when the United in Grace Cycling Team will be participating in Virginia Tour De Cure.  It’s not too late to join the team or to donate to the team and help bring awareness to fight against Childhood Cancer and Diabetes ….You might say we are having a two for one sale !

The Fight against childhood cancer will remain our main focus for 2016 however we also wish to recognize many of the other charities we hope to support.  I’ve said this many times and will continue to say, while there are many organizations worthy of our effort I truly believe only by working together regardless of our own affiliation will we help bring attention, increase government funding, and above all a cure to many of the diseases. That is why I will continue to support my family and friends in their own personal passion and drive in helping where I can in the fight against Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) , and Cystic Fibrosis just to name a few.

The United in Grace Team is kicking off our 2016 Care Packages for Cancer Soldiers initiative. This is a great opportunity to sponsor a care package directly to a child and family battling cancer. Throughout the year we will be seeking donations that will go directly to constructing a care package that contains items for both the child undergoing cancer treatment as well their family.

A small donation of $20.00 will help bring smiles to children battling cancer.  Please consider donating directly to the United in Grace Fund Raising page at United In Grace .

You may also request a care package to a cancer warrior or donate items, please check out United In Grace Care Packages for more information.

Thanks for checking in and we will try and provide more updates more frequently 🙂

Kick Cancer to the Kurb Tour Ready for Launch…

Hello everyone and thank you for checking in…

So why is the Kick Cancer to the Kurb tour any different than any other yearly cycling theme roundup of events I have done in the past ?

NEWS FLASH: It isn’t.

That’s what makes the 2016 Kick Cancer to the Kurb Tour special.  Despite what can only be described as an eye opening 2015 cycling season,  the 2016 riding season will continue to honor and help bring to light the battle of ALL THOSE battling cancer.  Please take note of the “all those” emphasis because it’s important.

Nothing has changed. This is not one of those New Years transformations or some re marketing of what we believe or what we stand for. No, it’s the same me, only with maybe a revitalized understanding of how important it is that every cancer story counts.  As one of my followers commented in 2015, “you saw the dark side in 2015 , in 2016 it’s time to help to bring to light all cancer stories.”

While the list of events is still being worked out, I promise all my friends, family, supporters and followers the fight will continue,  Whether it’s fighting for children with cancer, young adults, adults or seniors all cancer stories will be respected.  While there are others out there that seek to find only the cancer stories they can financially benefit from while ignoring all others, I assure you my belief remains unchanged.

The fight will continue because  every cancer story should be respected, every cancer story has a human factor and above all every cancer story counts.

It promises to be a heck of a ride…

Big Goals for the RIGHT Reasons……

Greetings everyone and thanks for checking in….

It’s hard to believe it’s already October, the leaves will be changing soon and the cycling season will be coming to an end. Actually it never really ends, we just have to find more creative ways to ride as the daylight hours become the biggest challenge.

There are some great events happening in the upcoming weeks and months in the cancer fight….

One of Cyclists4aCause greatest allies, Nick, will be riding in the LiveStrong Challenge in Austin Texas next week. While I have never met Nick, I can state without hesitation that he is the real deal when it comes to the cancer fight. I would strongly recommend reading is section in the WHY WE RIDE on Cyclists4aCause site.

I continue working with United in GRACE organization in the fight against cancer and helping to bring awareness and increased government funding for children’s cancer and other cancer related initiatives.  Members of the UIG Team attended CureFest in Washington DC this past month and helped to bring attention to the children’s cancer issue.

I’m looking forward to 2016 CureFest and not only representing United in GRACE but also helping to bring awareness together with all the other individuals and organizations that will be present. I have a feeling each year this event will only increase in popularity and with it national attention.

Like many organizations we had our 2016 planning meeting and there are some great events planned for next year. Right now, we are working on a Toy Drive for the holidays. In addition, we are also collecting gift cards, specifically ITUNES gift cards that we will deliver to the kids at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA.  This is the 5th year United In Grace will be spearheading the Piles of Smiles Toy drive and any assistance either as donations or directly to United in GRACE fund raising page would be greatly appreciated.

One of the main reasons I remain committed to UIG is that this team understands the battle that we have ahead. Many organizations have lost sight of the reason they are in the fight. I can promise you that United in GRACE will never lose sight of that fact, never. Yes, we are a small organization with big dreams but one in which understands the importance of the mission we have undertaken.

I would encourage any size donation to help us build this organization, I further promise that every donation and EVERY DONOR will be appreciated and respected , not for the donation itself, but the belief that together we can build this organization to help those that need it most.

Thanks everyone for checking in…..

Passing of a Cancer Warrior…

Thanks for checking in….

I’ve been sitting here looking at a blank screen and trying to figure out what, if anything. I could write that would have any relevance when I received sad word that Cancer took a friend of a friend earlier today.

This only helps to reaffirm my belief that Everyone’s Cancer Story should count regardless of demographics and their journey should count as each person who battles this disease is amazing in their own right, not only for the cancer battle itself but those that they touch and teach in their journey to never give up.

Hearing of her loss, while not knowing her personally, doesn’t change the fact that she was an amazing women who touched many and her life story and her battle with cancer can and should be an inspiration for all. If you have been following along with this blog you will know this is something that is and will remain my golden rule above all else. No one or no organization will ever convince me otherwise.

I feel sadden by the fact that I did not know her myself as I am sure all she knew and touched in her journey are stronger and better for the experience. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all that knew her and those that she touched in her journey.

Mama V you will be missed but not forgotten…..

Hi everyone and thank you for checking in….

There is still a lot of great riding left in the year and I am already planning some rides in 2016 to support the Kick Cancer to the Kurb Tour. I am already registered for the Hampton Roads Tour De Cure in April and I look forward to riding with the United in Grace Team to (1) support the diabetes cause and (2) to help bring awareness to the Cancer Fight. Both Diabetes and Cancer causes are near and dear to my heart and the Tour De Cure helps in both those fights.

We continue to work with a local cancer awareness organization to help bring cancer awareness to the children’s cancer fight. We have an event on the 29th and we are looking forward to once again getting out in the community and sharing our story and why we so committed to this specific cause. Rumor has it we will have some Storm Troopers and Princesses on station so if you are in the area please consider dropping by the BE BOLD GO GOLD EXTRAVAGANZA in Hayes, VA on the 29th.

This weekend is the 24hrs of Booty in Columbia Maryland. I want to thank my friends and readers that are volunteering at the event and those that are riding. It’s a great event and one in which I hope to return to someday. Please remember, it’s about the cause and the positive impact we can all make in the cancer fight by getting involved and EVERYONES STORY.

As we continue to prep for our upcoming event to kick off September as Childhood Awareness Month, I can’t encourage you enough to help us help the kids. Any donations to United in GRACE are tax deductible but even more important is the fact that the money raised will go directly to help bring cancer awareness and in time fund a clinical cancer trial at Sloan Kettering Memorial. I can promise you that the members of United in GRACE are committed to the fight and your donations will go as indicated. While we are only now beginning this journey we are confident the journey is worthy of our effort and we appreciate everyone’s support.

New Team Same Mission….

Greetings everyone and thanks for checking in…

It’s been an extremely busy few weeks and training continues for some upcoming challenges and events.   We are excited about the opportunity to bring individuals together in the fight for our respective causes. Just to clarify, we are not fund raising for ourselves. We believe that by building a community of fighters and supporters we can best serve the causes we have chosen to fight for.  Whether you cycle, run, walk or ? , C4ACause is dedicated to building a community in the fight against Cancer as well as helping in the training for events to fight against MS and Diabetes.

For those that have been following along, I am working with an organization, United In GRACE, which is a local organization helping to bring Childhood Cancer awareness and funding for childhood cancer.  United in GRACE’s goal is help fund clinical trials and other childhood cancer research.  In addition United in Grace has selected Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as our primary recipient.

  • Childhood cancer gets 3% of federal funding, the least of all cancers.  The NCI’s federal budget was $4.6 billion.

Please consider any size donation to the United in GRACE fund raising campaign by following this link. If unable to donate at this time please help share the fund raising page and our mission that kids shouldn’t have to fight alone.

Thanks everyone for checking in…
